What is AI, really?

When people say AI today, they almost always mean a large language model (LLM) — a program trained on huge amounts of text that learned to predict what comes next.

That sounds simple, but predicting text well turns out to require understanding a lot: grammar, facts, code, reasoning patterns, even humor.
